Your skin and hair are unique, and your laser hair removal treatment should reflect that. Choosing an appropriate wavelength is an important part of creating a treatment plan that balances effective hair reduction with care for your skin.
At Preferred Laser luxury med spa, our Candela GentleMax Pro offers two laser options: Alexandrite 755nm and Nd:YAG 1064nm. We select the appropriate wavelength for your skin and hair characteristics. These wavelengths are used individually, rather than applied simultaneously.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Laser hair removal uses light energy absorbed by melanin, the pigment in hair. This energy converts to heat, damaging the follicle to reduce future hair growth.
Because skin also contains melanin, wavelength selection and treatment settings matter. The aim is to target unwanted hair while limiting heat-related injury to the surrounding skin.
Alexandrite 755nm: An Option for Lighter Skin Tones
The Alexandrite wavelength is strongly absorbed by melanin, making it a commonly selected option for darker hair on lighter skin tones.
Its suitability depends on more than skin color alone. Hair characteristics, the treatment area, and recent sun exposure also influence the treatment decision. An individual assessment helps determine whether Alexandrite is appropriate for you.
Nd:YAG 1064nm: An Option for Deeper Skin Tones
The Nd:YAG wavelength penetrates deeper and is less strongly absorbed by melanin near the skin’s surface. This makes it a preferred option for many people with darker skin tones.
It still requires appropriate settings and careful assessment. Choosing Nd:YAG does not eliminate the possibility of burns or pigmentation changes, but its characteristics make it particularly useful when treating skin with more pigment.
Two Options Allow for More Individual Treatment
Having both wavelengths available gives us flexibility to select an option best suited to the person receiving treatment and ensures every visit is uniquely tailored to your skin and hair.
At Preferred Laser, we use either Alexandrite 755nm or Nd:YAG 1064nm, based on your assessment. Your treatment plan also considers your medical history, medications, skin condition, and previous response to laser treatments.
What Results Can You Expect?
Laser hair removal is a process. Multiple appointments are usually needed, and results vary with skin tone, hair colour, hair thickness, and the area being treated.
You may notice less regrowth over time, with remaining hair becoming finer. Maintenance treatments may be needed. Temporary redness, swelling, or discomfort can occur after treatment.
